WordPress Roles

The WordPress, user roles are a system of permissions that define what actions different users can perform on a website. Each user role has a specific set of capabilities that determine their level of access and control within the WordPress site. As of my last update in September 2021, here are the common user roles in WordPress:

  1. Administrator: Administrators have full control over the WordPress site. They can manage settings, install plugins and themes, create and manage other users, publish content, moderate comments, and perform any administrative task.
  2. Editor: Editors have the authority to create, edit, publish, and delete their own content as well as content created by other users. They can moderate comments on the content they manage.
  3. Author: Authors can create, edit, publish, and delete their own posts. They don’t have control over posts created by other users, and they can’t manage plugins, themes, or site settings.
  4. Contributor: Contributors can write and edit their own posts, but they cannot publish them. Instead, their posts need to be submitted for review by an editor or administrator.
  5. Subscriber: Subscribers can log in to the site and manage their own profile. They can also leave comments on posts, but they don’t have the ability to create or edit content.

In addition to these core user roles, WordPress allows for custom user roles and capabilities to be created and modified using plugins or custom code. This can be useful if you have specific requirements that are not covered by the default roles.

It’s important to assign user roles carefully to ensure that users have the appropriate level of access based on their responsibilities. Granting too many permissions to users who don’t need them can potentially compromise the security and integrity of your website.

Please note that developments might have occurred after September 2021, so I recommend referring to the official WordPress documentation or your specific version of WordPress for the most up-to-date information regarding user roles.
