Android Oreo

Android Oreo also known as Android 8.0 and 8.1, is the eighth major version of the Android operating system. It was officially announced by Google on March 21, 2017, and it was released to the public later that year. Android Oreo brought several new features, optimizations, and improvements to the Android platform. Here are some of the key features and changes in Android Oreo:

  1. Picture-in-Picture Mode: Android Oreo introduced Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode, allowing users to watch videos or use video chat apps in a small window while performing other tasks on their devices.
  2. Notification Dots: Notification Dots are small dots that appear on app icons when you have unread notifications. Users can long-press an app icon with a Notification Dot to see a preview of the notification and take actions.
  3. Autofill Framework: Android Oreo introduced an Autofill framework that makes it easier for password managers and other apps to fill in forms and login credentials.
  4. Background Limits: To improve battery life and device performance, Android Oreo introduced stricter limits on what apps can do in the background, which helps reduce battery drain caused by apps running unnecessarily.
  5. Notification Channels: Apps can now categorize their notifications into channels, allowing users to have more control over which types of notifications they receive from an app.
  6. Smart Text Selection: Android Oreo introduced a feature that uses machine learning to recognize and select text. For example, if you double-tap on an address, the system can select the entire address.
  7. Adaptive Icons: Developers can create adaptive icons that can display differently on different devices and launcher backgrounds, giving a more cohesive and visually appealing look to app icons.
  8. Improved Security: Android Oreo includes enhancements to security, such as Google Play Protect, which scans apps for malware and other threats.
  9. Bluetooth Audio Improvements: Oreo added support for high-quality Bluetooth audio codecs like LDAC, which can provide better audio quality when using Bluetooth headphones.
  10. Wi-Fi Aware: Android Oreo introduced support for Wi-Fi Aware (formerly known as Neighbor Awareness Networking or NAN), which allows devices to discover and communicate with nearby devices over Wi-Fi without the need for an internet connection or a traditional Wi-Fi hotspot.
  11. Project Treble: While not a user-facing feature, Project Treble was introduced in Android Oreo to make it easier for device manufacturers to update their devices to newer versions of Android.
  12. Battery Optimization: Oreo introduced improved battery management features, including background app limitations and more detailed battery usage statistics.

Android Oreo aimed to improve overall system performance, security, and user experience while introducing new features that enhance productivity and convenience. It was succeeded by Android Pie, Android 10, Android 11, and subsequent Android versions, each bringing its own set of improvements and features to the Android platform.
