Wi-Fi calling on Android
Wi-Fi calling is a feature available on many Android devices that allows you to make and receive calls over a Wi-Fi network instead of using a cellular network. This can be especially useful when you have a weak or no cellular signal but a stable Wi-Fi connection. Here’s how to enable and use Wi-Fi calling on Android:
Note: The availability and steps for enabling Wi-Fi calling may vary depending on your carrier and Android device. Make sure your carrier supports Wi-Fi calling and that your device is compatible.
1. Check Carrier Compatibility:
- Before enabling Wi-Fi calling, ensure that your carrier supports this feature. Not all carriers offer Wi-Fi calling, and it may require specific plans or devices.
2. Enable Wi-Fi Calling:
- Samsung Devices (One UI):
- Open the “Settings” app.
- Scroll down and select “Connections.”
- Tap on “Wi-Fi Calling.”
- Toggle the switch to enable Wi-Fi Calling.
- Google Pixel Devices:
- Open the “Phone” app.
- Tap the three-dot menu icon (usually at the top right).
- Select “Settings.”
- Scroll down and tap “Calls.”
- Tap “Wi-Fi calling.”
- Toggle the switch to enable Wi-Fi Calling.
- Other Android Devices (may vary by manufacturer):
- Open the “Settings” app.
- Look for the “Network & Internet” or “Connections” section.
- Find and select “Wi-Fi Calling” or a similar option.
- Toggle the switch to enable Wi-Fi Calling.
3. Set Up Emergency Address (if prompted):
- Some carriers may require you to provide an emergency address for 911 calls when using Wi-Fi calling. Follow the on-screen prompts to set up your emergency address if required.
4. Make Wi-Fi Calls:
- Once Wi-Fi calling is enabled, your Android device will automatically switch to Wi-Fi calling when you have a Wi-Fi connection and a weak or no cellular signal.
- You can make and receive calls as you normally would. The calls will be routed over the Wi-Fi network.
5. Verify Wi-Fi Calling Icon:
- When Wi-Fi calling is active, you should see a Wi-Fi calling icon (usually a phone with Wi-Fi waves) in your device’s status bar or notification panel.
6. Disable Wi-Fi Calling:
- To disable Wi-Fi calling, follow the same steps as enabling it but toggle the switch off.
Keep in mind that while Wi-Fi calling can be a lifesaver in areas with poor cellular coverage, it may use data from your home or public Wi-Fi network. It’s essential to be aware of any potential data charges from your carrier and monitor your data usage when using Wi-Fi calling, especially when roaming.
